In this episode, I chat with Tyler about being unemployed and not being able to find a job, even with several degrees, which led him to be a stay-at-home dad. He also has struggled with a food addiction and then lost 100 pounds!*

Tyler says his childhood was great and awesome and nearly everything good. His struggles didn’t come until much later in life. He went to College and grad school and eventually became a College professor. He thought he had found his dream job…. And then he was let go. He had violated a portion of his contract, so legally, the College had to fire him.

During that time, they also felt the need to move from Wisconsin back to Utah. So they did that. Tyler found an opening at a local College, applied and was interviewed, but didn’t get the job. Tyler found himself applying for job after job after job and he couldn’t get one anywhere! Eventually, Tyler’s wife was able to find a job and Tyler became the stay-at-home parent.

Tyler Christensen - Quote 1

Tyler admits that was a real hard time for him. He felt like he was being judged everywhere he went. He also felt like an embarrassment to his family and friends.

Tyler Christensen - Quote 2

When asking employers why they didn’t hire him and what advice they have for him in the future, many of them said he was over-qualified. At that point, Tyler began to remove his degrees and some of his experiences from his resume so that he would seem more like a “normal person” on paper. Even then, he still wasn’t getting hired.

Next we talked about his food addiction. He said he had gained weight on and off throughout the years. It wasn’t a substantial amount of weight all at once, just a few pounds each year and before he knew it, he was clearing 300 pounds. Tyler says he just couldn’t get his diet under control. He says it’s not that he was eating unhealthy, it was just that he was eating so much. His portions were off.
